What causes the white stains on the brick of my chimney?

When water from rain snow or ice can get into the brick or mortar and cause these chemicals onto the surface of the chimney. To fix this the cause of the water penetration has to be determined by a visual inspection of the chimney crown, mortar joints and flashing.
